Guides: fix your devices

When a test fails, these guides walk you through the fix with the exact menu names for your system.

Start with the test, then the guide

A guide works best when you know where the problem is. Run the matching test first. If the mic test shows silence, the device or system is at fault. If the mic works in the test but not in a call, the app is. The same goes for the webcam test, the keyboard test and the gamepad tester.

Then pick the guide for your situation:

How we write these guides

Each guide names the system versions it covers, such as Windows 11 and 10, recent macOS, iOS and Android, and Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Steps are checked against the vendors’ own help pages, and every guide lists those sources with the date we checked them. Menus move between updates, so if a step doesn’t match what you see, tell us through the contact page. App and brand names appear only to describe your situation; we aren’t affiliated with any of them.

Frequently asked questions

My mic works in the test but not in an app. Which guide do I need?

The hardware is fine, so look at the app: mic and camera in meeting apps. On Windows, also check that desktop apps may use the mic: microphone not working on Windows.

The browser never asks for permission. What now?

You probably blocked it once and the browser remembered. Allow microphone and camera in your browser shows where to undo that in each browser.

Are the steps up to date?

Each guide shows the date its steps were last checked and links the vendor pages we used, so you can see exactly what we followed.
