While you are on this page the space bar only counts presses, it does not scroll.

How the spacebar clicker works
Press Space and the count starts. Each press bumps the counter and the big keycap at the top goes down with your key. You see Hits, Hits/s and the time on the ring.
Holding the key does not count. When you hold a key down, your computer starts repeating it automatically after a short pause. Those repeats are ignored: only real presses, where you let go and press again, add a hit. So there is no trick with a heavy book on the keyboard.
While you are on this page the space bar only counts presses: it does not scroll the page or press a button that happens to be selected. Typing in a text field elsewhere on the page is not affected.
Modes: endless counter and timed tests
- Endless (default): a spacebar counter with no time limit. It keeps counting until you press Reset. Your highest count is saved as Best count. Use it to see how many presses you can do in one go, or just for fun.
- 5 s, 10 s, 30 s, 60 s, 100 s: a speed test. The timer starts on your first press. When it ends, the result shows your hits per second with two decimals, for example 62 hits in 10 s = 6.20 hits/s.
Each timed mode keeps its own best, and the last 20 timed runs are drawn as a small chart. Press Share result to get a picture of your score. Results stay only in this browser; Clear my results removes them.
What is a good spacebar clicker score?
We do not collect anyone's scores, so we cannot tell you an average. What we do have is a set of fun tiers: our own thresholds, just for fun, the same ones as on the CPS test:
- under 4 hits/s: Warming up
- from 4: Steady
- from 6: Quick
- from 8: Fast
- from 10: Blazing
- from 13: Lightning
The space bar is big and heavy compared to a mouse button, so do not expect the same numbers as on the CPS test. The fairest comparison is with your own best in the same mode.
Spacebar clicker on a phone or tablet
On a touch screen a large on-screen space bar appears under the counter. Tap it: every tap counts as a hit, and the modes work the same way. Taps on a glass screen and presses on a real key feel very different, so compare phone scores with phone scores.
Have a keyboard on your tablet? The physical space bar works too.
Tips for faster spacing
- Use your thumb, and keep it close. Lifting high wastes time; the key only needs to come back up a little.
- Try two thumbs, alternating, for short modes. It is the spacebar version of butterfly clicking.
- Hit the middle of the bar. The ends of a long space bar can feel stiffer or wobble on some keyboards.
- Relax your wrist in the 30 s to 100 s modes. A tense hand slows down fast.
- Pace yourself in long modes: an even rhythm usually beats a fast start.
If some presses do not seem to register, your space bar may be worn or sticky. Check it with the keyboard test, and the rollover test if you press it together with other keys in games. The guide laptop keyboard keys not working helps with stuck keys.
More speed games: the CPS test, the aim trainer, the reaction time test and the typing speed test, all on the skill tests page.
Frequently asked questions
Does holding the space bar count?
No. Holding the key makes your computer repeat it automatically, and those repeats are ignored. Only real presses count.
Is there a spacebar counter with no time limit?
Yes, Endless mode is the default. It counts every press until you press Reset, and remembers your best count in this browser.
Can I play the spacebar clicker on my phone?
Yes. On a touch screen a large on-screen space bar appears; every tap counts.
Why does the page not scroll when I press space?
On this page the space bar is used only for counting, so it does not scroll the page or press buttons. Typing in a text field still works normally.
Does an auto clicker work here?
A program that sends separate key presses would be counted, and there is no leaderboard to protect. But the result would measure the program, not you, so it is more fun without one.
What does hits per second mean?
The number of presses divided by the length of the mode. 62 presses in the 10 s mode is 6.20 hits per second.
